Firefighters rescued three people from a balcony when flames broke out at a sorority house early Monday morning, according to authorities.

The blaze began around 5:30 a.m. at the two-story house on Eighth Street near Termino Avenue, Long Beach Fire Department Capt. Jack Crabtree said. The Cal State Long Beach-associated chapter of Alpha Omicron Pi is on that block. NBC Los Angeles reported seven women live at the home.

It’s not clear yet what started the flames, but they began burning outside the house and then caught the structure on fire, Crabtree said.

Callers told the fire department flames were visible from the street and there were multiple people standing on the second-story balcony, according to authorities.

Crews used a truck’s ladder to rescue three women from the balcony and had the flames doused within about 10 minutes, Crabtree said.

One firefighter suffered a minor injury while fighting the blaze, but information wasn’t immediately available on how that happened, Crabtree said.
