The Spring Street Median between Temple Avenue and the Airport Tunnel will be improved with concrete pavement inside the medians, streetlights, irrigation, and landscaping. The Long Beach City Council approved the contract this past Tuesday, as work is expected to start in mid August and is estimated to be completed in November. The project is an extension of the 2009 street rehabilitation in the same area.
Existing asphalt concrete pavement in medians will be replaced with landscaping and porous concrete pavement, which will allow for infiltration of rainwater to contribute to the recharging of groundwater and the reduction of stormwater run-off.
Existing high-pressure sodium street lights will be replaced with LED street lights, reducing the amount of energy required to operate.
All of the old asphalt material to be removed under this contract will be recycled into new asphalt or utilized as base material on other street projects. Road base material used on the project will come from recycled concrete, rock, sand, and asphalt, and all concrete work will include recycled waste ash, diverting these materials from our landfills.
Traffic control will be in place to provide safety for motorists and workers. Lane closures will be required during construction, and while the roads will stay open during working hours, motorists can expect some traffic delays. Therefore, motorists are encouraged to use alternative routes, when possible.
The project is part of the overall improvements to the Airport Area Assessment District, which is providing the funding for the $557,557 project. There is no impact to the General Fund.
