It was a coincidence, but well-timed: The day after campus police at Cal State Long Beach discovered graffiti warning of a shooting, the university trained students and others how to use survival kits to prevent deaths from critical injuries.

Wednesday’s scare was deemed not to be credible, but it rattled the campus nonetheless.

On Thursday morning, university officials and nurses from St. Mary Medical Center performed live demonstrations, teaching students how to stop bleeding using kits containing medical supplies like gauze, compression bandages and tourniquets. The kits have been scattered around campus.

“These kits come on a day when our campus is dealing with a recent threat and, unfortunately, emphasizes the need for this kind of planning and preparation,” said LBSU provost Brian Jersky.
