UPDATE 11:58AM  |  City officials are saying the Long Beach Peninsula was not impacted from the first Hurricane Marie storm surge event Tuesday morning, as previously anticipated.

City crews prepared for a storm surge, as a result of Hurricane Marie in the Eastern Pacific Ocean, which was expected to hit the Peninsula at about 10:00AM Tuesday.

There have been no reports of flooding or other issues because of the surge, according the the Long Beach Fire Department.

Crews will continue to watch the area, according to a statement from the LBFD. Sand berms have been fortified, and additional staff and equipment have been in place to closely monitoring the situation.

The LBFD is anticipating another surge Wednesday evening at about 6:00PM. Sand bags are available to Peninsula residents and can be picked up in the area of Ocean Boulevard and 55th Place. Bins of sand and empty bags are also available in the area of Ocean Boulevard and 72nd Place, as well as Ocean Boulevard and Claremont Avenue. Residents must bring their own shovels and are limited to filling 10 bags.

Storm Surge Threatens Peninsula Area, Sandbags Available

ORIGINAL 10:30AM  |  A storm surge with higher-than-normal water levels is expected to impact the Peninsula area Tuesday morning, and again Wednesday evening, city officials said.

The surge is being caused by Hurricane Marie in the eastern Pacific Ocean, and city crews are preparing for it by fortifying sand berms, deploying additional staff and closely monitoring the situation.

Volunteers from the Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT) and the Long Beach Search and Rescue Explorer Program also distributed fliers to households on the Peninsula in preparation for the storm surge.

“Residents should take appropriate steps to be prepared for this storm surge event, by securing personal property and vehicles in areas that are prone to flooding along the Peninsula,” said David Ashman, manager of Disaster Management, in a statement.

The city was expecting the first storm surge to hit the Peninsula at around 10:00AM Tuesday, but so far no flooding or damage has been reported. The second surge is expected to hit Wednesday evening around 6:00PM.
