Motorists driving down Atlantic Avenue or Artesia Boulevard may catch a glimpse of new streetlight banners recognizing graduating Jordan High School students.

The program highlighting North Long Beach students is in its sixth year, however, in response to new challenges brought upon from the COVID-19 pandemic, the recognition is being expanded to include every 2020 graduate from Jordan High, regardless of college admissions.

“Recognizing the accomplishments of our students at Jordan High School is an annual tradition in Uptown,” Councilman Rex Richardson, who represents the district where Jordan is located, said in a statement.

Richardson and LBUSD Board Member Megan Kerr jointly announced the recognition program.

A total of 66 banners were hung this week on Atlantic Avenue, Artesia and Long Beach Boulevard and South Street. They will be on display until Sept. 10.

“This was no ordinary school year,” Kerr said in a statement. “I am so proud of our students who worked hard finish out their high school career in these unprecedented and historic times.”
