3:55pm | The Teachers Association of Long Beach (TALB) will hold a rally protest at the Wilson High School gymnasium this Thursday at 4:15pm, to oppose teacher layoffs, student fee hikes and public school funding cuts. Several local education groups will be present, and guitarist Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine fame will perform.

The protest is part of a nationwide National Day of Action to Defend Education movement that will see similar rallies held across the state and country.

“We need to stop these devastating cuts.  In Long Beach alone, 651 teachers will lose their jobs in the LBUSD, classes are being cut at LBCC and CSULB while student fees are increasing – hurting an entire generation of children,” reads a statement from TALB president Michael Day.

Included in the rally are the California Teachers Association, California Faculty Association at CSULB, the Long Beach City College Community College Association and student leaders from Californians for Justice.

“Now the Governor is proposing an additional $2 billion in cuts to our public schools and colleges,” reads the statement from Day.  “We must stand together and say to our Governor and lawmakers,  NO MORE CUTS, NO MORE COMPROMISES.”
