It may be sunny out now, but with the amount of rainfall that Long Beach has received over the last few weeks (and in the weeks to come), the Long Beach Water Department is advising all residents and businesses to turn off their irrigation systems at least for the rest of February.  Plenty of rain has made up for the need for sprinklers, they say.

“This rain we’re getting allows us to really ratchet down outdoor water use, which can save hundreds of thousands of gallons of water,” according to Matt Lyons, Director of Conservation and Planning for the Long Beach Water Department.    “We need to be taking advantage of it.”

Even with the recently high levels of rainfall, water reserves are still far below normal and the state of California is knee-deep in a water shortage crisis that continues to worsen.  Long Beach has been a model for water conservation since Septmeber of 2007, when a water supply shortage was declared by the Board of Water Commissioners and a massive campaign to save water was launched.

So keep it up, Long Beach!  Enjoy today’s temporary sun and turn off the sprinklers for a few weeks.
