To get President’s day started off right with some juicy political news, The District Weekly‘s Dave Wielenga digs up an intriguing story that’s sure to resonate for at least the next 14 months.
That’s when the election for Tonia Reyes Uranga’s 7th District City Council seat will be held, in April of 2010. Reyes Uranga will not be eligible to retain the seat due to term limits, and Wielenga reports today that her husband, Long Beach City College Board of Trustees member Roberto Uranga, has filed papers to run and keep the position in the family.
So what will that leave Reyes Uranga to do? Wielenga has a theory, which the current Councilmember seems to lend a little validity to:
Meanwhile, it appears as though Tonia may be mulling a run for mayor. The normally straight-speaking councilwoman did a nifty sidestep when asked if she would be a candidate for the job currently held by Bob Foster, whose first term expires next year.
“All I’m going to say is that labor has been looking for a strong candidate,” said Reyes Uranga. “There’s a feeling that the present administration has not been good to working families.”
