More than 1,500 people had an early Thanksgiving this Monday, during the second annual “Serving With A Thankful Heart” luncheon and dinner, hosted by 6th District Councilmember Dee Andrews.
The event took place at McBride Park on Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue, and received assistance from more than 100 volunteers, as well as City Manager Pat West and NFL linebacker Willie McGinest – a native Long Beachian and Poly High grad.
Many co-sponsors of the event were involved, including the Long Beach Convention & Visitors Bureau, Hilton Hotels and Hyatt Hotels and The Clancy Foundation. The Long Beach Yellow Cab Company even donated free transportation for local senior citizens so they could be included in the festivities.
“We are so blessed to have corporate partners that help those that are in need, especially the senior members of our community,” said Andrews.
Everyone was served, whether the attendees brought their families or had fallen on hard times. A press release from Andrews’ office said that many either were alone for Thanksgiving or were homeless during this holiday season.
“It is a great warmth and a positive vibe that filled the room and everyone is so appreciative for the blessings of the day,” said Jonathon Kraus, chief of staff for Councilmember Rae Gabelich.
