A home was damaged following a two-alarm fire Friday evening, but no one was injured.

Long Beach Fire Department (LBFD) personnel dispatched to the fire on the 2100 block of Elm Avenue at about 6:45PM, said LBFD spokesman Jake Heflin.

Upon arrival, the more than 50 firefighters who responded saw smoke coming from the eaves and attic space and the crawl space beneath the home.

Those firefighters requested a second alarm at 7:05PM, and firefighters has to cut through an exterior wall to access the crawl space and go through the roof to access the attic.

The fire was knocked down at 7:19PM, Heflin said.

The home was divided into two dwellings, each with four people living inside, he said. Most of the damage was in the front dwelling, where the fire was believed to have broken out, Heflin said, leaving the four residents in that dwelling to be displaced.

Heflin added that the rear dwelling was largely unscathed.

Prior to the fire department’s arrival, a resident tried unsuccessfully to extinguish the flames with a garden hose, Heflin said.

This was the second two-alarm fire Friday. The first destroyed the apartment of a man living in a senior living complex in the area of Seventh Street and Alamitos Avenue earlier that afternoon.

No further information is available about Friday night’s fire, and its cause has not yet been determined. We will update this story as we learn more.
