Three men were stabbed and another was shot and killed in two separate incidents across town from one another last night.

The shooting death occurred in the vicinity of 10th St. and Temple Ave. and was reported as a person down at approximately 1:35AM Wednesday morning. According to police, however, residents in the neighborhood reported hearing gunshots approximately five to ten minutes prior to looking outside and noticing the victim down on the ground.

“When officers arrived, they located a male adult victim lying on the sidewalk who had sustained an apparent gunshot wound to the upper body,” a Long Beach Police Department statement said. “Long Beach Fire Department paramedics responded and pronounced the victim deceased at the scene.”

Six hours earlier and more than two miles away, three men were stabbed in the 1400 block of Magnolia Ave. A man police believe is responsible for the stabbings was in custody today, said Long Beach police Sgt. Aaron Eaton and at least one of the victims was transported in critical condition, according to a news photographer at the scene. The stabbing occured at around 7:40PM Tuesday night and the news photographer reported that the site is a transitional group home.

“We are still trying to determine what caused this to occur. That may take some time,” Eaton said late Tuesday. The name of the suspect was not immediately released.

Though the events don’t appear related, the occurance of these two crimes in one night only adds to the violence of the last week, which included the shooting death of a 23 year-old at the gas station at 7th St. and Alamitos Ave. and the car fire in an Eastside 7-Eleven parking lot that resulted in the death of the victim. According to police department statistics, last year was a 40-year low year for violent crime.
