Thursday, April 7, 3:25pm | Police said Wednesday that no foul play is suspected in the case of a 22-year-old Long Beach man whose legs were severed by a freight train March 31.

The Long Beach Police Department has not released the man’s name but did confirm that the investigation has thus far revealed that he was intoxicated at the time of the incident, according to the Press-Telegram.

Police said the incident occurred at about 2:30 a.m., and the man lay helpless for nearly three hours in the barren industrial park north of the 91 Freeway and east of Cherry Avenue before a passerby found him and called 911 at about 5:14 a.m.

It is not known whether doctors were able to reattach the man’s limbs.

Friday, April 1, 9:15am | A man’s legs were severed early Thursday morning when he was apparently hit by a freight train, authorities said.

Paramedics with the Long Beach Fire Department were dispatched at about 5:14 a.m. Thursday to the scene near a set of train tracks about 100 yards north of the 91 Freeway east of Cherry Avenue, according to information provided by Firefighter Steve Yamamoto, a department spokesman.

The victim is a Latino man in his mid-20s. He was found by a passerby, who called 911.

β€œHe was conscious but in critical condition, with both of his legs severed,” Yamamoto told the Los Angeles Times.

Firefighters located the man’s detached legs and transported them to the hospital in case they can be reattached.

The train tracks are mainly used by freight trains, Yamamoto said, adding that the train apparently hit the man but did not stop.

Long Beach police are investigating, authorities said.
