6:31pm | Long Beach Vice Mayor Suja Lowenthal and residents of the city’s Craftsman Village Historic District will celebrate Arbor Day this weekend with a community tree planting in the Second District, and volunteers are being urged to participate.
While Arbor Day, a nationally recognized observance that encourages the planting of trees, is this Friday, April 29, the tree planting will be held the following day, Saturday, April 30.
The group will meet in the parking lot of Hamburger Dan’s at 1155 E. Seventh St. at 9 a.m., where Lowenthal will give a speech and instructions on the day’s activities will be announced. The actual planting will follow at about 9:30 a.m. and run through noon. All volunteers are reminded to wear comfortable shoes and clothing.
About 30 trees will be planted in the Craftsman Village Historic District neighborhood. Grant funding from the Southern California Air Quality Management District is being used to purchase the saplings. Additional support is being provided by the city’s Office of Sustainability, Public Works Department and Neighborhood Improvement Division, according to information provided by Lowenthal’s office.
Over the last two months, Lowenthal has partnered with neighborhood and business groups to plant more than 75 trees in the Second District, which Lowenthal represents on the City Council.
Anyone wishing to volunteer is asked to contact Mark Magdaleno at 562-570-6684.
