Winds as strong as 25 to 35 knots per hour began to hit Long Beach this morning, resulting in a power outage that affected 954 customers at its peak, according to the Southern California Edison power outage map. Affected areas include North Long Beach and land to the east of El Dorado East Regional Park.

The National Weather Service (NWS) had issued a gale warning to be in effect in Southern California until 9:00PM tonight. The NWS also issued a wind advisory for coastal California cities, including Long Beach, that ended at 10:00AM. “Damaging gusts” of wind could come in as fast as 70 miles per hour, according to the NWS.

The roads were littered with the debris of palm fronds, while palm trees and flags whipped back and forth with each gust Monday morning.

The wind and a lower temperature expected for today, of 66 degrees, made for a chilly morning, despite the sun. Temperatures are expected to climb by eight degrees Tuesday and stay there the rest of the week, give or take a degree, before retreating Sunday.

“Impacts…strong winds can make driving difficult…especially for drivers of high profile vehicles and vehicles towing trailers,” the NHS statement said. “Due to the weakening of many trees caused by the drought…numerous trees and large branches may be knocked down by the wind.”
