A water line broke near Long Beach’s California Heights neighborhood Friday morning, prompting street closures in the area of Atlantic Avenue and Bixby Road, officials said.

As of 4 p.m. Friday, the Long Beach Police Department said Atlantic Avenue from Roosevelt Boulevard to 37th Street would be closed to traffic “for an undetermined amount of time.”

Long Beach Water Department crews were notified of a break in the water line around 10:45 a.m. and responded to the affected area, Long Beach Water Department spokesperson Lauren Howland said.

The line that broke was a 12-inch pipe, Howland said, resulting in more water coming up than usual.

At this time, crews are working to shut off the water in the area while they work on repairs, Howland said, adding that the issue may take crews more than one day to fix.

Residents and businesses will not be impacted during repairs, Howland said.
