9:00am | The best thing about Long Beach are the many extraordinary people that help shape its future. At the end of every year, the Long Beach Post takes time to recognize a Person of the Year – someone who has left an indelible mark on our community and at the same time is helping to shape the future of our great city.

We invite you to debate and discuss who should be recognized in 2011 for their contributions to Long Beach.

This effort marks the fifth consecutive year that we will name a Person of the Year. Community activist Justin Rudd received the distinction in 2007 for his tireless volunteer work, and Olympic champion volleyball player Misty May won in 2008 for her role as an unofficial world-wide advocate for the city. We issued a sobering, posthumous Person of the Year award in 2009 as Wilson High School honor roll student Melody Ross was remembered. Scott Jones of We Love Long Beach was honored in 2010 for bringing tens of thousands of people together to make Long Beach a better city.

Long Beach Post staff will make the final decision in the coming week. The 2011 Long Beach Person of the Year will be announced on December 12, 2011 online and in print.
