A 28-year-old woman was displaced Sunday night after her apartment, which she had just moved into three weeks ago, sustained significant damage from a fire that evening, officials said.

Long Beach Fire Department (LBFD) personnel responded to the scene at about 9:39PM at a triplex on the 200 block of Nieto Avenue to find heavy smoke, said LBFD spokesperson Jake Heflin.

Arriving firefighters found a fully-involved fire in a rear unit of the second story of the triplex. The apartment had significant fire damage, Heflin said.

Additional units were called in at about 9:42PM and the fire was knocked down by 9:51AM.

The woman who lived in that apartment unit was not home at the time of the fire and the American Red Cross was called in to assist her with temporary lodging.

A unit on the bottom floor sustained minor damage and a second unit on the upper floor was not involved.

No one was injured in the fire, Heflin said, adding that there were 36 firefighters assigned at the height of the fire.

“We needed to prevent any exposures and to make sure the fire had not communicated to the attic space,” he said. “Upon knockdown, the extent of the fire was investigated. There were no additional exposures. Additional resources were subsequently released.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation, and no other details are available. We will update this story as we learn more.
