An 80-year-old woman was killed Friday afternoon in the parking lot of Smart & Final in Cambodia Town after being hit by an SUV, Long Beach police said.

Police said the 45-year-old driver of a 2007 Dodge Nitro SUV backed out of his parking spot and drove forward to exit, but struck the woman, who was squatting down, in the parking stall next to his car as he was exiting.

The man who was driving stopped and requested a bystander call 911, then stayed with the victim until personnel with the Long Beach Fire Department arrived, police said.

“The driver of the Dodge remained on scene and cooperated with the investigation,” police said in a statement Friday night. “Neither impaired or distracted driving were contributing factors of the collision.”

Officers arrived at the scene near Atlantic Avenue and Anaheim Street at 3:16 p.m. regarding an injury traffic collision at the Smart & Final parking lot.

The victim was transported by the Long Beach Fire Department to a local hospital, where she died, authorities said.

The woman’s name was withheld pending notification of next of kin, police said. The driver of the SUV also was not identified.

Long Beach Police ask that anyone with information regarding the incident call the department’s collision investigation detail, Det. Shawn Loughlin or Det. Kevin Johansen at 562-570-7355.
