Police say a woman was shot early Saturday morning near the Los Angeles River in West Long Beach.

Long Beach Police Department spokesperson Richard Mejia said that officers responded to reports of an assault with a deadly weapon at 2:25 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 22 somewhere in the area of Anaheim Street and the LA River, less than a mile from Drake Park.

When police arrived at the area, they found a woman suffering from a gunshot wound to the upper body, Mejia said. The Long Beach Fire Department arrived and personnel transported the woman to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

At this time, police do not know the motive for the shooting. However, police suggest the woman, who may have been homeless, was shot by an “unknown suspect” who fled the area in a black vehicle before officers got to the scene.

The LBPD is handling the investigation.
