A Los Angeles Department of Water and Power employee found dead at the Haynes Generating Station early Saturday morning was identified Sunday as 60 year-old Vincent Martinez. Martinez was discovered at around 1:30AM Saturday morning in an area of the plant away from construction, said Joseph Ramallo of the LADWP. An autopsy is pending to determine cause of death.
Haynes is a natural gas steam power plant that is undergoing major rennovations to eliminate the use of ocean water to cool the plant and abide by current environmental code. It was generating electricity this week, Ramallo said.
“This is a tragic loss and tragedy for our employee’s family and our entire LADWP family,” said Aram Benyamin, the plant’s senior assistant general manager. “Our hearts go out to the family, friends and co-workers of our
employee.”
Martinez’s death at Haynes came days after a ruptured pipe at the adjacent AES’ Alamitos steam power plant shot a plume of steam into the sky for about 45 minutes. The two plants are similar in operations and reside next to one another on Studebaker Road, but are not affiliated.
