Police are investigating after a man was shot at while driving in Long Beach’s Zaferia neighborhood early Wednesday morning.

According to the Long Beach Police Department, the shooting took place sometime after 4 a.m. in the area of 14th Street and Ohio Avenue.

Two men were driving in the area when they were alerted to what they thought was the sound of gunfire, police said. That’s when they observed gunfire coming from a vehicle behind them, according to police.

The gunfire eventually struck the vehicle, causing some glass to shatter and injure the driver, police said.

The driver of the vehicle then continued driving until reaching a safe place and then called police, authorities said.

Officers were notified of the shooting around 4:25 a.m. and responded to the 600 block of Loma Avenue, where they found the driver of the vehicle suffering from an injury to the upper body.

Though Long Beach Fire Department personnel also responded to the scene, the driver declined to be transported to the hospital for treatment, police said.

No arrests have been made in the shooting. The suspect vehicle fled in an unknown direction before officers arrived, according to the LBPD, who said neither suspect information nor a motive for the shooting is known at this time.
