City meetings

  • The Long Beach City Council meeting this week (Aug. 27) will include budget presentations by the departments of Community Development and Library Services. The Council will also consider a five-year agreement with Long Beach City College to establish a student internship program and consider a $100,000 block grant from Bloomberg Philanthropies, among other items. The meeting will commence Tuesday at 3 p.m. inside the Civic Chambers, 411 W. Ocean Blvd. 
  • Several reports will come before the city’s Budget Oversight Committee scheduled Tuesday at 1 p.m. inside the Civic Chambers. These include an overview on the use of Measure A tax funds for Long Beach’s Elevate ‘28 infrastructure plan, as well as a report by the city’s Crisis Response Team.
  • A presentation on generative AI and its usage as a case registry will be discussed at the Technology and Innovation Commission Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. inside the Civic Chambers. 
  • The Long Beach Harbor Commission will meet Monday at 1:30 p.m. and go over several items, including an environmental review of Pier T Marine Terminal Redevelopment, approval of bidding advertisement to the Pier E North Expansion Project and a $202,500 agreement with Top Trumps USA, Inc., to be featured in the Long Beach Edition of Monopoly. Commissioners will also consider first hearing of several properties needed to be purchased for its high-profile Pier B Rail Support Yard Project. 
  • The Los Angeles Board of Supervisors Aug. 27 meeting, as well as their upcoming Sept. 3 meeting, are canceled. Supervisors will next convene on Sept. at 9:30 a.m.

Business events and information

  • The 2nd Annual Long Beach Women’s Fair 2024 celebrating National Women’s Equality Day, is today (Monday) from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Civic Center Plaza. The commemoration of Congress signing the 19th Amendment includes 30 information tables with services and activities specifically for women and girls, music, entertainment, and refreshments. In the evening, the film “Still Working 9to5” will be shown at the Art Theatre Long Beach. The First Fierce Women of Long Beach Awards will also be presented at that time. More information here.
  • The Long Beach Area Chamber of Commerce Women’s Business Council is hosting a panel on accessibility, including legal advice and training. The panel is from 9 to 10:30 a.m. on Sept. 5 the Chamber, One World Trade Center, suite 101. Register here.
