There’s no doubt that artificial intelligence is rapidly reshaping the workplace. Marketers are learning prompt engineering, accountants are auditing algorithms, and nurses are using AI-assisted diagnostics. Even industries that feel further removed from this technology, from construction to counseling, are quietly being influenced by automation and data.

The natural response to this disruption is to ask: how do I stay relevant? In terms of AI literacy, it’s not about having special technical knowledge. Adaptability, critical thinking, and communication skills are what will keep workers competitive as the workforce changes across nearly every industry.

For a growing number of professionals, getting ahead doesn’t necessarily require a degree or certificate. There’s a lesser-known path called Open University at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB), and it’s available for anyone who wants college-level training without going through the formal admission process.

College Credit, No Admissions Obstacle Course

Usually, college classes require students to go through a lengthy application process, then wait for official acceptance before getting enrolled full-time. Open University offers a different way in for non-matriculated students to register—whether they’re working toward a degree, building specific skills for a career pivot, or simply staying sharp as lifelong learners. Even high school students can sign up with a letter of recommendation from a principal or counselor.

Classes are available on a space-available basis throughout the year, with many offered online or in hybrid formats, so it’s easier to fit coursework around a full-time job or other life commitments.

Why Upskilling Matters Right Now

You don’t need to work in tech to feel the effects of a changing economy. Employers across nearly every field are looking for people who can adapt quickly, think critically, and keep learning as their industries evolve. That might mean:

• Strengthening the skills that stay in demand in any industry—leadership, communication, ethics, and strategic decision-making.

• Building formal credentials or coursework in your current field, so you’re positioned for advancement as roles evolve.

• Exploring a new direction entirely, taking classes to test out a career pivot before committing to a full degree program.

Open University makes any of these paths accessible for adults returning to the classroom for continuing education. The Fall 2026 schedule of classes spans hundreds of courses across computer science, engineering, business, psychology, global studies, and more. You can build a personalized plan based on your needs, instead of committing to a rigid program that locks you into one path.

Part of a Bigger Statewide Push

Earlier this year, California’s Labor and Workforce Development Agency partnered with public universities and community colleges on a statewide initiative aimed at helping residents build the general skills and confidence needed to stay competitive in a changing economy, regardless of their background or career path. The message from state leaders was consistent: adaptability, not a single credential, is what will define career resilience in the years ahead.

Open University reflects that same philosophy on a practical, individual-focused level. Rather than waiting for a formal program to catch up with the moment, you can start building relevant skills this semester, one course at a time.

How Registration Works

Getting started with Open University registration is simple and straightforward:

Browse the class schedule. Fall 2026 classes begin August 24, and the class schedule lists course options by subject, college, or general education category.

Submit the registration form. Some courses require instructor or department approval, but you can submit your request before that approval comes through. Staff will be in touch to help guide you through the process.

Get your student ID. New students receive a campus ID that unlocks Canvas (CSULB’s online learning platform), library access, and other campus resources.

More Than a Classroom

Beyond coursework, a CSULB campus ID opens doors to resources that are increasingly relevant in an AI-driven economy. For example, the ISPACE is a hi-tech facility located on campus with 3D printing services, a 360° theater, a virtual reality lab, and podcast studios. Gaining hands-on experience with this emerging technology can set you apart in almost any field, from marketing to healthcare to the arts.

A Flexible On-Ramp, Not a Full Commitment

Up to 24 units of Open University courses can be applied toward an undergraduate degree at CSULB, and up to nine units toward a graduate degree, so classes you take now can count towards your later goals. Because CSULB is a regionally accredited institution, most class credits can also be transferred to other colleges. That flexibility makes it a low-risk way to test a new direction.

The pace of change in the workplace isn’t slowing down. The professionals who adapt well aren’t necessarily tech insiders who have been working with AI for years; they’re the ones who keep learning, one course at a time, while the opportunity is right in front of them.

Open University registration for Fall 2026 opens August 17, 2026, and the deadline to enroll is September 21, 2026. Courses are billed per unit, so you only pay for what you take.
