On Saturday, June 7, hundreds of children with cancer and serious blood disorders, along with survivors and families honoring loved ones who have passed, participated for the 38th Annual Champions Run for Life “Torch Run.” This event helped raise funds for expanded treatment programs and research at the Jonathan Jaques Children’s Cancer Institute at Miller Children’s & Women’s Hospital.
Participants triumphantly carried an Olympic-style torch – a symbol of hope for a cure – in an inspiring relay around Long Beach’s iconic Lions Lighthouse for Sight at Shoreline Aquatic Park. A crowd of sponsors, community supporters, and volunteers lined the waterfront, cheering on the children, survivors, and families as their names were called. Whether running, walking, or wheeling around the course, participants were met with waves of applause, creating a heartwarming atmosphere of camaraderie and hope.
“We are here at Champions Run for Life “Torch Run” celebrating my four-year-old son Ryan and his battle through cancer,” said Michael Lopez. “We were supposed to be here last year, but because Ryanwas so sick, we weren’t able to attend. Now, we have our family and friends here supporting us, and seeing Ryan running and looking back at us meant everything. He is going through something that I couldn’t even imagine going through — and smiling through it all.”
The day was filled with personal triumphs: from former patients celebrating 13 years in remission, to current patients marking milestones in treatment, to families honoring the memory of loved ones. Each runner led their team of supporters in style, waving posters and banners, many dressed in vibrant attire. Following the relay, families and friends gathered for a festive picnic and carnival by the ocean.
“At the Jonathan Jaques Children’s Cancer Institute, we recognize our champions every day, but this occasion allows us to unite with our families and staff uniquely,” said Annie Santos, program director, Jonathan Jaques Children’s Cancer Institute, Miller Children’s & Women’s Hospital. “Champions Run for Life “Torch Run” is our key fundraising event, and everyone who takes part in this event helps to provide critical support for our patient programs and services.”
The Jonathan Jaques Children’s Cancer Institute at Miller Children’s & Women’s Hospital provides quality, compassionate care to children with cancer, sickle cell disease and other serious blood disorders.
