Long Beach State sophomore Simone Hoey concluded match play in the round of 64 at the 34th U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship Wednesday.
Kimberly Kim (Hawaii) defeated Hoey, 4 and 3 at the par-71, 6,092 yard Warren Golf Course at the University of Notre Dame to move onto the round of 32.
Kim, was the runner-up at last year’s WAPL to Jennifer Song and to Amy Anderson at the U.S. Girls’ Junior. Kim was also the youngest champion in U.S. Women’s Amateur history when she claimed the title at age 14.
In Wednesday’s match play, Kim took the early lead as she went 2-up on the first two holes. Hoey was able to tie Kim on the par-4 third hole and closed the gap to 1-up as she won the par-3 fourth hole.
Kim won the next three holes to go 4-up as Hoey won the eighth hole and tied on the next two. It was a battle for the next five holes as Kim won Nos. 11, 13 and 15 and Hoey won the 12th and 14th holes.
