The Long Beach State track and field team will send a trio of athletes to Eugene, Ore., for the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Championships, June 9-12. The meet will be held at Historic Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon.
Senior Kenneth Medwood kicks off the competition for the 49ers on Wednesday evening with the 400-meter hurdle semifinals at 6:45 p.m. The 400H finals are scheduled for 5:05 p.m. on Friday. Senior Alex Shaw and junior Randi Hicks will compete in the women’s javelin trials and final at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday.
THE BIG THREE
Kenneth Medwood has made the most of his final season at The Beach. The Los Angeles, Calif., native established a 400m hurdle school record (50.37) at the Beach Invitational, before topping that performance with a time of 49.66 to win the individual title at the Big West Championships.
Alex Shaw will have a homecoming of sorts this weekend as she hails from Milwaukie, Ore. Shaw currently ranks third all-time in the javelin at Long Beach State with a distance of 167-05, which she established in 2008. This year, she finished second at the Big West Championships and recorded a season-best 164-11 at the Mt. SAC Relays.
Randi Hicks (Oxnard, Calif.) has made an immediate impact at LBSU after transferring from Ventura College. In her first meet as a 49er, Hicks set a school and conference record in the javelin with a toss of 170-11. She went on to win the event four times during the season, including at the Big West Championships, where she established a meet record (162-04).
THIRTEEN 49ERS GARNER ALL-BIG WEST HONORS
Thirteen 49ers earned All-Big West honors, while three also garnered All-West Region recognition, following their performances at the conference and regional meets. Kenneth Medwood, Randi Hicks and Alex Shaw all notched top 12 performances at the NCAA West Preliminaries to claim all-region accolades.
The LBSU men, who took second at the Big West Championships, had 11 athletes bring home all-conference honors. Medwood (400H, Long Jump, 4×400) and Sam Jeter (400H, 4×100, 4×400) led the way with a trio of top three finishes. Nimrod Piggee (110H, 4×100) andAlex Freitas (800m, 4×400) were also multiple All-Big West performers.
