Reports From LBSU
The Long Beach State softball team picked up the series victory against Cal State Fullerton as it defeated the Titans, 6-2, in the rubber game Sunday afternoon at Anderson Family Field.
Junior Brooke Turner (11-10) went the distance in the circle, allowing two runs on just three hits. She also struck out two, while issuing four walks.
The 49ers out hit the Titans, 12-3, and were led by freshman Bree Stephan and senior Ashley Weber, who both went 2-for-3 at the plate. Junior Liz Javier also chipped in a pair of hits, while freshman Caitrin DeBaunadded two RBI.
The Beach (23-26, 7-11 BWC) got on the board early as Stephan opened the game with an infield single. She advanced to second on an illegal pitch before moving up another 60 feet on a sacrifice bunt by Weber. DeBaun then grounded to the right side to plate Stephan.
Long Beach State struck again in the second when Kristen Pocock drew a leadoff walk before Ashley Levine reached on an infield hit. Pocock eventually crossed the plate on an RBI single from Casey Burba.
LBSU built a 4-0 lead in the third frame as Weber doubled and came around to score on a throwing error after Brandy Reyes singled to second base. Javier then drove in Reyes with a double down the right field line.
CSF (13-37, 8-10 BWC) cut the 49ers’ lead in half in the bottom of the third, scoring two runs on a pair of hits.
Long Beach State would hold on, however, adding insurance runs in the sixth and seventh. Both DeBaun and Jodi Nakawatase had RBI singles for the final 6-2 margin.
The Beach closes out the regular season next weekend when it plays host to UC Riverside, May 14-15. The 49ers will honor their six seniors before their final home game on Saturday.
