Reports From LBSU

The Long Beach State track and field team concluded a successful showing at the Big West Multi-Events Championship Saturday afternoon at Matador Track in Northridge.

Junior Nicholas Armstrong continued to post strong performances in the decathlon as he accumulated 7,224 points to finish second overall. His point total ranks him second in school history behind two-time All-American Chris Richardson.

Armstrong, the 2009 junior college decathlon state champion, finished in the top five in every event. After winning the high jump on Friday, Armstrong claimed top honors in the discus with a season-best 139-00. He also took third in the final event of the day as he clocked in at 4:44.42 in the 1500-meter run.

Armstrong added a third-place performance in the pole vault (13-11.25), while finishing fourth in the 110 hurdles (15.07) and the javelin (164-01). All three of those marks were season bests.

Sophomore Sara Macey also scored for the 49er women as she finished eighth overall in her first career heptathlon. Her point total of 4,445 ranks her 10th among the LBSU all-time leaders.

Macey had a pair of top 10 finishes on Saturday, placing ninth in the javelin (90-10) and 10th in the 800m (2:31.08).

Sophomore Rebecca Hamilton, who was also competing in her first heptathlon, took 13th with 4,163 points.

Long Beach State continues the Big West Championships with the track and field events, May 14-15, at Matador Track.
