Poly’s freshman pitcher Chris Castellanos didn’t make many mistakes on the mound yesterday afternoon at Blair Field while Millikan made enough mistakes to give the Jackrabbits a run away victory, 15-6. Castellanos recorded his first complete game in high school as he scattered eight hits and struck out three with no walks.
“We were pretty excited to get him this summer,” said Poly head coach Toby Hess of his freshman southpaw who gave up just one earned run. “He has command of his three pitches, especially the change up. When (Millikan third baseman Matt) Clampitt is swinging like that, you know it’s a good pitch because he’s such a good hitter.”
Castellanos only learned the circle change a few years ago from a travel ball coach, but he throws it like a veteran as it dances off his left hand. “I was a little nervous,” said Castellanos. “But once I got on the mound I was pretty relaxed. I just let the game happen.” When asked what was working for him, the freshman sheepishly answered, “everything.”
Everything was working for the Poly bats as well. The Jackrabbits came out swinging and racked up nine hits in the first three innings for three runs, sparked by a screaming double down the line from Thomas Walker that scored two. The third baseman finished 4-for-4 with three RBI.
“We were more aggressive early in the count,” said Hess. “Against Cabrillo we let the pitcher dictate, but today we took control.”
With the bats already rolling, five Ram errors opened the door for the Jackrabbits to run away with it. Eric Gonzalez got it going after an error in the fifth, and he finished 4-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored. Henry Severson went 3-for-5 with and RBI and a run scored.
Poly improves to 2-0 in league and will play Jordan on Tuesday at Blair Field. Millikan falls to 0-2 and will take on Wilson at Blair on Wednesday night.
