Lakewood 9, Wilson 1
If you heard of a seven inning game with 21 hits, you would rightly expect an offensive slugfest. But in the Moore League contest between Lakewood and Wilson yesterday at Lakewood High, the slugging went one way. The Lancers converted nine hits into nine runs as they nearly mercy ruled the visiting Bruins, 9-1.
Wilson had chances to say the least, putting two runners on in five of seven innings, but the timing never matched up while Lakewood pitchers Nicole Warren and Janelle Hayes kept the Bruin hitters off balance with a healthy dose of change ups.
“We just didn’t hit in the clutch,” said Wilson head coach Chris Leveque. But the Lancers did, and that was the difference. Or more specifically, Sarah Carrasco was the difference.
The senior leader went 4-for-4 with 3 RBI against Millikan on Tuesday night and followed it up with a 2-for-3, 4 RBI performance against Wilson that included a double and an inside-the-park home run. After Eliza Crawford singled to lead off the third inning with the game still scoreless, Carrasco sent a screamer down the third baseline.
“I thought it was a double when I hit it,” said Carrasco. “But when I got to second and they didn’t have it, I was like, ‘let’s go’.” Carrasco slid into home, and the Lancers added another run in the third when Shelby Blair drove in Sarah Magill with a single to right field to make it 3-0.
Carrasco sparked the offense again in the fourth inning when she drove in Hayes and Crawford with a double to right center. Shelby Blair added her second RBI with another single to make it 7-0, and the game was effectively over.
“The bats are really going right now, and hopefully they stay that way,” said Lakewood coach Andy Miramontes. “I always tell the team that we expect them to win league, and they take that seriously, so they come out ready to play.” After 9-2 and 9-1 wins this week over the anticipated challengers to open Moore League play, Miramontes says he wasn’t expecting this lopsidedness, but, “yeah I’ll take it.”
Millikan 6, Poly 5
A bevy of errors decided the game at Joe Rodgers field as the Rams held off the late Jackrabbits charge and won, 6-5. Millikan was leading 6-1 in the fifth inning after home runs from Brittany Adler and Melisa Sponholz, but Poly put the bat on the ball in the bottom half of the frame and put up four runs with the help of Ram miscues. Brooke Cullison came into the circle for Millikan and got Poly pitcher Ashley Betance-Kearn to ground out with the tying run on third to end the fifth, and the Rams survived for victory.
Cabrillo 16, Compton 2
On their way to a five inning mercy rule win, the Jaguars racked up seven runs in the first inning and four in the second. Elena Gutierrez, Siria Duran, Leslie Navarro and Melissa Reyes all tallied multiple hits and runs scored while pitcher Janessa Martinez struck out four batters in the first two innings. Cabrillo will play Lawndale in the Whittier Tournament this weekend.
