It’s a sad day in North Town, as we’ve learned that the Panthers’ head football coach of six years, Scott Meyer, has stepped down from his position.  In addition to a popular on-campus presence, Jordan loses its second high-caliber coach in a week, as Meyer announced his resignation on Wednesday, just days after boys’ basketball coach/athletic director Ron Massy announced his retirement.

“I had a great six years,” said Meyer via telephone Friday morning.  “I really enjoyed my time here.”

In a relatively short period of time, Meyer was able to change the football culture at Jordan.  In 2006, the Panther s went 1-9; the next year, 5-5.  In 2008, they went 7-3, with an important win over eventual CIF semifinalist Lakewood.  With 2008 Moore League Player of the Year John Timu returning in 2009, expectations were high for the 2009 team both at Jordan and around the league.  Poly coach Raul Lara said before the season he was more worried about Jordan than any other team on the schedule; but an early season-ending knee injury to Timu, and a streak of injuries through most of the team’s other key contributors, led to a frustrating 3-7 season.

Those frustrations weren’t a cause of the move for Meyer, who will continue to coach football on the high school level in the coming years. Once Jordan has a system in place for interviewing and considering replacements, we’ll post a notice for all interested parties; in the meantime, we’d like to wish both Meyer and Jordan luck as they transition to new stages.
