Long Beach State’s four-game stretch at the Lancer Invite got off to a slow start today as the 49ers fell to Maryland 10-9 despite three goals from Lauren Sieprath.

The contest itself got off to a slow start, with a goal from Long Beach State’s Krizia Cerda being the only tally in the first period. The 49ers then continued to press and took a 4-2 lead into the second half after goals from Cerda, Meaghan Leonard and Melissa Matheson.

Maryland was able to start their comeback in the third period. The Terrapins would take the lead 6-5 in the final minute of the third period, but Long Beach State answered with a goal by Sieprath with nine seconds to keep the score tied.

In the final quarter, however, Maryland scored three unanswered goals to take a 9-6 lead, and after the 49ers pulled within one, a Simone Lewis put the Terrapins ahead by two. That lead would hold despite a last-second goal from the 49ers, who lost 10-9.

11-3 over Concordia

After a loss earlier in the day, the 49ers put a pounding on Concordia, defeating the Eagles 11-3 in the second game of four for Long Beach State at the Lancer Invitational.

Lauren Sieprath was again the star for Long Beach State, scoring three goals for the second straight match as the 49ers stormed to an early lead and never looked back against Concordia. The 49ers picked up a 4-0 lead in the first quarter behind a pair of goals from freshman Julie Lantz.

Long Beach State added another goal in the second quarter, as Sieprath tallied her first score before the Eagles got on the board just before the half, as the 49ers went to the break with a 5-1 lead.

In the third quarter, the 49ers extended their lead to five goals, and three late goals down the stretch gave Long Beach State the 11-3 victory.

Goaltender Kristen Straiger made five saves for the 49ers to pick up the win, holding the Eagles to three goals, a season-low for a Long Beach State opponent.

Host Cal Baptist will be the first opponent for Long Beach State on Saturday, and then the 49ers close out their time at the Lancer Invitational with a match against Occidental.
