No. 53 Long Beach State extended their current winning streak to five matches, defeating No. 55 Minnesota 4-3. The 49ers picked up four wins in singles to grab the victory, their third win over a ranked foe this season.
The 49ers lost the doubles point in a rough start to the afternoon. Jaklin Alawi and Rachel Manasse earned a win at No. 1 doubles over Ferrazi/Palen, but the 49ers fell at No. 2 doubles and then lost the point when Muravniik/Spilca defeated Sarah Cantlay and Anna Jeczmionka 8-6.
Long Beach State rebounded in singles however. Deborah Armstrong earned a fast win over Doron Muravnik 6-4, 6-1, and Rachel Manasse became the 49ers’ only double winner on the day with a win over Alexa Palen 6-2, 6-2.
Anna Jeczmionka grabbed a win at No. 5 to get the 49ers within one point, and Anais Dallara closed out the match for Long Beach State, winning a first-set tiebreaker before a 6-3 victory to seal the match.
Jaklin Alawi battled to a tiebreaker in the second set but fell 6-3, 7-6 to Alessandra Ferrazi, and Sarah Cantlay lost at No. 6 sinlges to Magdelena Wiecha.
Long Beach State brings another ranked opponent to the Rhodes Tennis Center this weekend, when the 49ers host No. 42 Nebraska on Friday, March 19 at 2 p.m.
