Boxing legend and Olympic gold medalist, Oscar De La Hoya will take on Grand Marshal duties next weekend for the 42nd Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach, officials announced Thursday.
Taya Kyle, wife of “American Sniper” and Navy SEAL Chris Kyle, will stand alongside De La Hoya, serving as Honorary Starter on Sunday’s Verizon IndyCar Series race.
The National Anthem will be courtesy of Sgt. Marcus Dangelo of the California Army National Guard 40th Infantry Division Band. Additionally, attendees will be treated to a flyover of a Boeing C-17 military transport airplane by the U.S. Air Force out of March Air Reserve Base in Moreno Valley, a release stated.
De La Hoya is most famously known as one of the best fighters of his era, being 10-time world champion in six divisions, being elected into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2014 and being among the biggest draws in the history of boxing.
Since he left the ring in 2009, De La Hoya built Golden Boy Promotions, where he manages boxing superstars Canelo Alvarez, Jorge Linares and Randy Caballero. In 2014 and 2015, he was named Sports Illustrated’s “Promoter of the Year.”
De La Hoya is also a Grammy-nominated singer and an active philanthropist. His contributions to the Mexican American community have earned him recognition by legislators in California, Los Angeles and Washington D.C.
Kyle is a New York Times bestselling author for her book, American Wife, according to the release. She is also an advocate for women, families, strength, faith and American ideals. In 2015, Kyle was presented with the Ronald Reagan Award at the National Republican Congressional Committee March Dinner, as well as the Stonewall Jackson Award by Charlotte Motor Speedway.
Following the death of her husband, Kyle took over as Executive Director of the Chris Kyle Frog Foundation. There, she continues the legacy of her late husband, while serving the needs of military and first responder families.
The 42nd Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach will run from April 15 to April 17.
