Reports From LBSU
One day after scoring more runs in a game than they had all season, the Dirtbags continued to produce offensively in a 10-3 win over Arizona. Devin Lohman and Steve Tinoco each had three hits for Long Beach State.
The Dirtbags scored 10 runs on 11 hits in support of Andrew Gagnon, who picked up his first win of the season after a solid start. The sophomore pitched 6.0 innings, allowing just one earned run with four strikeouts on four hits.
Arizona got on the board first with an unearned run, as Rafael Valenzuela came around to score after a walk with one out in the inning. Long Beach State answered in the top of the second on an RBI groundout by Joel Thys.
Tied at 1, the Dirtbags put together their biggest inning in the third. Brennan Metzger led off the inning with a single and Jordan Casas walked to get two runners on. A single by Lohman loaded the bases, and Metzger came home on a double play. The inning continued with a walk and a hit batter, and Tinoco drove home two runs with a single. Jones would then come home on an error by Cole Frenzel, putting the Dirtbags ahead 5-1.
Long Beach State added an unearned run in the top of the sixth, and with the score at 6-2 in the seventh, a leadoff triple from TJ Mittelstaedt sparked a two-run rally with Tinoco’s third RBI of the night giving the Dirtbags a six-run lead.
In the final inning of three innings of relief from Arizona’s Tyler Hall, the Dirtbags added two more runs on hits from Tinoco, Legg and Tre Dennis to take a 10-2 lead. Arizona added one in the bottom half of the inning, but Kenny Arnerichclosed out the game to seal the series win for Long Beach State.
Long Beach State will try to complete the sweep with an early getaway game tomorrow, playing a third game with Arizona at 11 a.m. PT. That start is threatened by rain, so check back with www.longbeachstate.com for details if any postponements occur.
