Freshman Renee Caballero tossed a two-hit shutout to lead the Long Beach City College softball team to a 3-0 non-conference win over visiting Los Angeles Mission College on Saturday at LBCC.
The Vikings got a much-needed win after a tough conference loss on Thursday and improved to 9-4 overall.
Caballero (4-1) allowed just three batters to reach base and struck out seven.
She gave up a lead-off single to Mission’s Diane Ravago in the top of the fourth inning and hit Taryn Fowlds with a pitch to lead off the sixth, but quickly erased both with ground ball double plays.
Samantha Durazo connected for a one-out double in the seventh, but Caballero followed that with a strike out and ground ball to end the game.
The Vikings got all the offense they would need early.
Freshman shortstop Melissa Schaefer smoked a two-out RBI single up the middle to drive in freshman center fielder Anissa Noland in the first inning.
LBCC followed that with two more runs in the second.
Freshman second baseman Karina Veit singled home pinch runner Sheera Jenkins and sophomore catcher Majella Friel’s RBI single drove in sophomore left fielder Monique Ogata to give Long Beach the 3-0 lead.
Noland (2 for 4, 1 run) and Veit (2 for 3, 1 RBI) both had two hits to lead the LBCC offense.
Nataly Garcia (2-3) picked up the loss to Mission (3-6). She allowed three runs and eight hits and walked two and struck out two.
Long Beach returns to South Coast Conference action on Tuesday (Feb. 23) when it travels to East Los Angeles College for a 3 p.m. game.
