Sophomore guard Darrin Kirk sank a free throw with 0.5 seconds left to give the Long Beach City College men’s basketball team a 64-63 South Coast Conference South Division win over visiting Los Angeles Harbor College on Friday night at the Hall of Champions Gym in both teams’ season finale.

The Vikings close the 2009-10 season with a 9-15 overall record and 5-3 mark in the SCC South.

Long Beach led 61-51 with 2:46 remaining and appeared to be on its way to the easy win. But L.A. Harbor made one last push by putting together a 10-0 scoring run that got them within one point (61-60) with 1:08 to go.

Sophomore forward Stephan Gwin sank a pair of free throws with 53 seconds left on the clock to put Long Beach up by three.

But with 11 seconds remaining, the Seahawks’ Kevin Dawson was fouled by LBCC freshman guard Imani Hall, sending him to the free throw line for three shots. Dawson nailed all three to tie the game, 63-63.

On LBCC’s final drive down court, Kirk was able to draw foul from L.A. Harbor’s John Raquel as he drove down the lane and put up a desperation shot from the near the free throw line.

Kirk connected on his first attempt, but missed the second. L.A. Harbor’s full court fell well short and LBCC escaped with the win.

Long Beach had four players scoring in double-figures with sophomore forward Chris Brown leading the way with 15 points and eight rebounds. Hall came off the bench and nailed four big three-pointers in the second half on his way to 13 points.

Sophomore forward Lane Whitney and Gwin also chipped in with 10 points each in their final game as a Viking.

Raquel led L.A. Harbor (12-14, 4-4 SCC South) with 16 points while Dawson poured in 12 points.
