It was hard to find a positive for LBSU fans on Saturday, as both of the school’s basketball teams got thumped (following a home opener sweep of the men’s volleyball team on Friday).  Fortunately, there’s Long Beach State’s lesser-known, lesser-funded group of ice hockey players who have grabbed ahold of the consistency that’s eluded the school’s other teams lately.  They ran their winning streak to six in a row, with a 13-3 shellacking of the UCLA Bruins.

Sean Hoang may have set a one-game scoring record for the team with six goals; Brad Robers also had a breakout scoring game, with one nifty shorthanded goal and five assists. Alex Miklovic continues to play solidly in the net for the 49ers. Paul Leigh also had two goals while Chris Chan, Scott Byrum, Tanner Woodbury, and James Robelotto all found the back of the net once apiece.

A few key stats during the 49ers six-game streak:

-49ers have outscored opponents 46-14

-Beach power play is an impressive 25% (9 for 36); NHL best right now is Montreal at 24.7%

-Beach penalty kill is a dominant 92.5% (37 of 40); NHL best right now is Boston at 88.1%
