Champions close, and that’s what the four-time Moore League Champion Lakewood Lancers did last night at home against Poly in the league opener with a 41-21 victory.
Poly showed its youth and hurt itself with three points lost on rules violations and unsportsmanlike conduct.
In the marquee match up of the night at 125 pounds, Lakewood’s Cody Gurule took on Poly’s Sergio Preciado. Gurule led early and was up 11-6. The junior pinned Preciado and earned six points that started to tilt the scoreboard the Lancer way.
Alex Oul started the night right for Poly with a 9-7 win over Nick Dalton at 103 pounds, but Lakewood came back with lopsided victories from Ryan Bautista and Travis Cardwell.
In the most controversial match of the night, heavyweights Wilson Edwards of Poly and Alex Barillas of Lakewood did not shake hands pre/post match. Barillas pinned Edwards, and Edwards had a point deducted for unsportsmanlike like behavior.
Lakewood will face Millikan and Poly will travel to Jordan on January 7th
