The Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach announced that the Grand Prix Association of Long Beach had been chosen by Formula E to facilitate the operation of its inaugural Long Beach ePrix when it hits the streets next year.
While Jim Michaelian, president and CEO of the Grand Prix Association, was delighted that the city had been selected as a venue for the event, the organizers of the ePrix itself are even more honored that the Association can help run the event.
“Jim and his team have a proven track record in operating one of the most famous street races in the US, so they were an obvious choice to help facilitate our Long Beach ePrix and we’re looking forward to working with Jim and his team to make this a fantastic spectacle for the people of Southern California,’ Alejandro Agag, CEO of Formula E, said in a release.
The inaugural Long Beach ePrix, part of the Federation of International Racing’s new Formula E Championship series, will take place two weeks before the city hosts the annual IndyCar Toyota Grand Prix in April of next year.
Agag is hopeful that the free admission, provided through the series’ Legacy Program, will attract school and university students from the area.
The Long Beach ePrix is the sixth round of the world’s first fully-electric racing series will feature 20 electric race cars driven by top-class drivers on a segment of the traditional Grand Prix circuit in downtown Long Beach. The Formula E circuit will challenge drivers with seven turns on a 1.6 mile course, using the same start/finish line as the revered Grand Prix.
The first Long Beach ePrix will take place on Saturday, April 4, 2015.
