Two-time American League All-Star Evan Longoria completed a rare double play by winning a Silver Slugger the same year as a Gold Glove.
The Tampa Bay Rays third baseman, already selected as a Gold Glove winner for his defensive work at third base, won its AL counterpart, the Silver Slugger, on Thursday.
In his second full year in the bigs, Longoria continued the success that found him earning AL Rookie of the Year honors, hitting .281 with 33 home runs and 113 RBI. Longoria also finds himself in rare territory by winning both awards in the same year, particularly at such a young age, joining Ivan Rodriguez, Ken Griffey Jr. and Benito Santiago as the only players younger than Longoria to do so.
Like the Gold Glove, the Silver Slugger award is given to one player per position in each league, with a designated hitter added for the AL. The award is voted on by coaches and managers in each league, with the stipulation that they may not vote on members of their own team.
