Women’s Soccer: Long Beach cruises to 8-0 rout of visiting L.A. Harbor
Freshman forward Claudia Toledo recorded her second straight hat trick and the Long Beach City College women’s soccer team rolled to an easy 8-0 South Coast Conference win over visiting Los Angeles Harbor College on Friday at LBCC.
Long Beach’s fourth straight win improved the Vikings to 11-5 overall and 8-2 in the SCC while Harbor fell to 7-5-5 and 4-4-2 in conference play.
Five different Vikings scored and the Long Beach defense didn’t allow a shot by the Seahawks.
The Vikings led 4-0 after 45 minutes thanks to first-half goals from sophomore Karina Ponce (4th minute), two from Toledo (17th, 37th), and freshman Ashlynn Bolt (39th).
Bolt got the scoring going for LBCC in the second half with her second goal of the contest in the 68th minute. Sophomore defender Angela Fornaseri recorded a penalty kick goal in the 81st minute and Toledo wrapped up her hat trick with her third goal in the 87th minute.
Starting freshman goal keeper Sara Thatcher closed out the scoring for the Vikings when she came on the field to record a goal in the 89th minute.
Thatcher (55 minutes) and sophomore Ileana Aparicio (35 minutes) combined for Long Beach’s eighth shutout of the season.
Toledo also had two assists, and LBCC got single assists from Ponce and freshmen Thatcher, Alisha Del Toro, Lauren Ingram, and Heather Michaelis.
The Long Beach women return to action on Tuesday (Nov. 3) when it travels to face rival Cerritos College in a 3 pm SCC game.
Men’s Soccer: Long Beach pulls off 3-1 upset of L.A. Harbor
The Long Beach City College men’s soccer team continued its push to earn a postseason berth and got a boost thanks to a 3-1 South Coast Conference win over visiting Los Angeles Harbor College on Friday at LBCC.
The win improved the Viking men to 7-6-3 overall and 4-3-3 in the SCC while Harbor suffered just its fourth loss of the season and fell to 11-4-2 and 6-3-1 in conference play.
Long Beach controlled the tempo of the game and outshot Harbor by a 14-8 margin.
Despite that, the Seahawks jumped out to a 1-0 lead after Rudolfo Jaregui’s goal in the 14th minute.
But on the ensuing kickoff, the Vikings came right back to score the equalizer. Sophomore Albert Jimenez fed freshman Jesse Castaneda with a breakaway pass and he placed his shot past Harbor goalie Greg Williams to even up the game in the 14thminute.
From that point, it was all Long Beach.
Jimenez earned his second assist on Roberto Tapia’s goal in the 18th minute and Long Beach led 2-1 at halftime.
Sophomore Manuel Batista sealed the win in the 50th minute with his unassisted goal. After a Harbor foul was called just outside the penalty box, Batista curved his direct free kick around the wall and in to the back of the net to close out the scoring.
Freshman Luis Romero posted four saves in goal for Long Beach, while Williams came up with seven saves for Harbor.
The Long Beach men return to action on Tuesday (Nov. 3) when it travels to face rival Cerritos College in a 1 pm SCC game.
