The No. 8 Long Beach State 49ers (5-5) scored two dramatic goals late in the second half of their morning game en route to defeating No. 17 Navy (10-7), 9-8, in sudden death overtime Saturday. In the afternoon game, Long Beach State lost, 16-6, to the No. 2 Bruins of UCLA on the first day of the UCI Invitational.

In the morning opener, Jeff Greenwood scored a game-high three goals, including his third goal of the game that came with 11 seconds remaining to put the game into overtime, while goalie Derek Wiebe-Bailey had a season-high 18 saves to help lead the 49ers to victory.

The Beach was tied at 6-6 following regulation and traded goals with the Midshipmen in the first and second overtime periods. Navy’s Johnny Meiners gave the Midshipmen an 8-7 lead on a goal with 1:43 left in the second extra session but Greenwood scored as time expired to extend the game.

Justin Koeppen scored a goal on the 49ers first possession of sudden-death overtime lifting The Beach past Navy. Alexsandar Petrovicscored two goals and Chase McCollBrian SchieferShane Luth each chipped in a goal for The Beach.

In the afternoon, the eighth-ranked 49ers trailed second-ranked UCLA (12-2) the entire match, falling behind 6-1 after the first period, as 12 different Bruins scored in the 16-6 win over The Beach. 

Jeff Greenwood and Matt Farrington led the eighth-ranked 49ers (5-5) with two goals each. Justin Koeppen and Patrick van der Linde also scored goals for the 49ers.

Matthew Kubeck saw his first action at goalie this season and recorded four saves for The Beach.

The Beach will face the winner of the USC/UCSB game tomorrow morning at 9:50 am on the campus of UC Irvine at the Anteater Pool.
