Long Beach State began the 2009-10 season with its first competition at Cal, sending five players to compete in doubles and singles. Deborah Armstrong and Anais Dallara picked up the biggest win of Day One, upsetting top-seeded Stephany Chang and Nelly Raviva of Cal in doubles 8-5.

In singles, freshman Jaklin Alawi was the only 49er to compete in Flight A, where she fell to Arizona State’s Michell Brycki 6-4, 6-4. Alawi then took the first set against Nevada’s Florence DeVrye 7-5 before losing 6-4 in the second and falling the tiebreaker, 10-5.

In flight B, junior Deborah Armstrong defeated Kimi Cox 6-1, 6-2 to advance to the second round, but was then defeated by Cal’s Tayler Davis in three sets, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4. Freshman Anna Jeczmionka also participated in that flight, losing to Maggie McGeorge and Elle Carney.

Sophomore Julie Luzar was the 49ers lone entrant in Flight C, and she came through with a 6-2, 6-3 win over San Francisco’s Blaire Reed to advance to the semifinals.

In doubles, Armstrong and Dallara’s win over the top-seeded Cal duo was the team’s highlight, but Alawi, teaming up with Molly Aloia of St. Mary’s also picked up a win in Flight B defeating Legaspi and Zamudio of UC Davis 8-6. In the team’s other action, Nevada’s Mizyuk and Verbenne stopped Jeczmionka and Luzar 8-1.
