The Long Beach Century Club, the premier sports booster club in the City has announced the latest inductees to their Hall of Fame. Begun in 1957 the Hall of Fame recognizes individuals for outstanding achievement in the area of sports. The members of this year’s class will be inducted at the club’s 54th Annual Sports Banquet to be held on Tuesday, February 9, 2010 at the Grand Convention Center, 4101 E. Willow Street in Long Beach.
Paul Chafe – L.B.C.C. Coach from 1959 to present
Coach Chafe has been an integral part of Long Beach City College athletic success in two sports, football and golf. In the years 1959 thru 2000 he served as assistant football coach of nineteen different teams and served as the head coach for four years (1966-1969). Paul has been the position coach of eight of the top ten quarterbacks in LBCC history. He has been part of 12 conference and four national championship teams. His efforts have been rewarded with his induction into the California Football Coaches Hall of Fame. As the Head Men’s Golf Coach (1980-2003) he has guided his teams to 20 conference, seven So-Cal and four State Championships. Also, four times his team was runner-up in the State Championship. He has been selected the California Golf Coach of the Year four times. Over the years he has been the President of the Southern California and State Golf Coaches Association. Currently, after 5 years of “retirement”, Paul has returned to again serve as Head Men’s Golf Coach and Assistant for the Football team. He is in his 6th decade of coaching for City College and is a member of their Hall of Champions.
Dave Marshall – Outstanding collegiate and Major League Baseball Player
Dave was an outstanding three sport athlete at Lakewood High School before entering LBCC to focus on baseball. As a freshman he excelled for the Vikings, and was voted the team’s Most Valuable Player. His selection as Metropolitan Conference Player of the Year was the result of Dave leading the conference in batting average, runs batted in, runs scored, hits, doubles and triples. He earned 1st Team Junior College All-American and the LBCC coaches chose him as the Viking of the year for 1961-62. At the end of his freshman year he was drafted by the Los Angeles Angels. Over the next eleven years he played professional baseball – seven of those years, 490 games, he was an outfielder in the Major Leagues. His Major League career included playing for the .S.F. Giants (1967-1969), the N.Y. Mets (1970-1972), the S.D. Padres (1972) and the Chicago White Sox (1973). He was inducted into the City of Long Beach Baseball Hall of Fame in 2006 and is a member of the L.B.C.C. Hall of Champions.
Kemp Richardson – Champion Golfer
Playing for the Millikan Rams Golf Team in 1964 Kemp was All Moore League, All-C.I.F., Moore League Player of the Year and Captained the Rams to the Championship of the Moore League. He went to U.S.C. on a full scholarship where he achieved All-American status and his team won the 1967 & 1968 Pac-Ten Golf Championships. He went on to become an accomplished amateur golfer winning numerous championships. In 2001 he won the USGA Senior Amateur Golf Championship, a title won by his father in 1987 making the Richardsons the only father-son combination to win USGA titles. He also won the British Senior Open Amateur Championship in 2001 making him the amateur champion for two countries in the same year.
