The fall tennis season starts up this weekend, as Long Beach State heads to Northern California for the first of three fall tournaments that the 49ers will participate in. The Beach will send five players to Cal, competing in both singles and doubles.
Junior Deborah Armstrong returns for her third season with the 49ers just two wins why of reaching 100 wins over her career. Armstrong is the fifth seed in the second flight of singles, and will look to try and top her 24 singles wins in 2009.
The 49ers will also get their first in-competition looks at freshmen Jaklin Alawi and Anna Jeczmionka. Alawi, hailing from Sofia, Bulgaria, has been ranked as high as 170 by the ATF and will get her first chance at collegiate competition this weekend. Alawi is entered in the top flight of singles with a number of ranked foes topped by #4 Jana Juricova of Cal. Jeczmionka, a Top 5 junior from Poland will be competing in the second flight of singles along with Deborah Armstrong.
Sophomore Julie Luzar rounds out the 49ers competing in singles, as she is one of eight players vying for the flight three title. Luzar ended the season 2009 season with 20 wins, one of five 49ers to reach that mark.
In doubles, #121 Anais Dallara will team up with Armstrong, while Jeczmionka and Luzar will pair up as both teams will compete in the second flight of doubles, consisting of 16 teams.
Action at the tournament begins on Friday, October 2 and will continue through Sunday.
