Both the Long Beach City College men’s and women’s soccer teams opened up their South Coast Conference schedules with big wins over visiting El Camino College Compton Center on Tuesday at LBCC.

The LBCC women scorched Compton 9-1 while the Viking men were 4-1 winners over the Tartars.

In the women’s contest, Long Beach (4-3, 1-0 SCC) got two goals each from sophomore Karina Ponce, and freshmen Claudia Toledo and Ashlynn Bolt on its way to the rout.

The Vikings dominated the contest throughout and outshot Compton (0-2, 0-1 SCC) by a 40-3 margin. But Compton actually led early in the game, getting a goal in the second minute from forward Waynita Glenn.

LBCC responded with a goal by Toledo in the third minute and then took the lead for good with a pair of quick goals in the 38th and 40th minute by Toledo and Bolt.

Long Beach went on to outscore Compton 6-0 in the second half to cruise to the easy win. Freshmen Mary Shank, Lauren Ingram (3 assists), and Michelle Mellinger also added single goals for the Vikings.

Thatcher made just one save for Long Beach over the first 66 minutes while freshman Ileana Aparacio closed out the game in goal without facing a shot.
