The Long Beach State women’s soccer team (4-5) fell to host Loyola Marymount, 1-0, Friday afternoon at Sullivan Field.
It was an evenly played match as the 49ers held a slight advantage in shots (7-to-6), while both teams had four corner kicks.
Sophomore Shawna Gordon led The Beach with two shots and freshman Markie Gleason recorded LBSU’s lone shot on frame.
The Lions dented the scoreboard in the first half when Kelsey Wilson sent a free kick from 20 yards out into the upper left corner.
LBSU had a chance to even the score in the final minute of play. With 45 seconds on the clock, Gleason sent a shot past LMU’s goalkeeper, but a Lion defender was able to clear the ball before it reached the goal line. The clearance, however, went to sophomore Nicole Sweetman, but her shot was also deflected out.
LMU (6-3-1) stayed perfect at home, and improved its all-time record against LBSU to 3-0-0.
Long Beach State returns to action next Thursday (Oct. 1) when it hosts Pacific in its Big West Conference opener at 3 p.m.
