It was a successful day for both the Long Beach City College men’s and women’s water polo teams as both squads opened up their South Coast Conference schedules with wins over visiting Mt. San Antonio College on Wednesday.

The LBCC men pulled out a 12-8 win while the women cruised to an 18-6 victory.

The men’s game was close throughout and got really tight after two straight third-quarter goals by Mt. SAC that cut LBCC’s lead to 6-5.

But Long Beach closed out the third with five unanswered goals, including two from sophomore Dusan Ivanovski, to take a commanding 11-6 lead into the fourth quarter.

Freshman Trevor Tautolo led the Vikings with three goals while Ivanovski, and freshmen Scott Butler and Ryan McDonald all added two goals.

Sophomore Duran Reid totaled eight saves in goal for Long Beach.

The win improved the Long Beach men to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in the SCC. The Viking men return to action this weekend (Sept. 18-19) at CuestaCollege Tournament.

The LBCC women had a much easier time in their contest, as they jumped out to 7-0 lead early in the second quarter. Sophomore Kimmy Morrison led the early charge with three first-quarter goals.

Long Beach was up 7-3 at halftime and held a 14-4 advantage heading into the final quarter.

Morrison closed the game with a team-best five goals and freshman Jessalyn Salas added three goals.

The win keeps the Long Beach women unbeaten at 5-0 overall and 1-0 in conference play. The women are off this weekend but return to action next Wednesday (Sept. 23) with a 3 pm SCC game at L.A. Trade Tech College.
