Report by the Armada’s Josh Feldman

With two outs in the scoreless game in the top of the ninth inning, All-Star shortstop Omar Bramasco drove a 2-2 pitch off reliever Andre Simpson into left field to score Dan Luyben from second base for the Armada to score the only run of the game Tuesday night at Goodwin Field.

Koichi Misawa pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to record his team-high seventh save of the season, as the Armada defeated the Flyers to improve to 15-17 in the second half, 35-35 overall.  The Armada still have a chance to make the playoffs for a GBL record fourth time.

Long Beach reliever Justin Segal pitched a 1-2-3 eighth inning, striking out two batters, including formers major leaguer Scott Spiezio, to keep the game scoreless going into the ninth.  Segal (1-1) earned his first win of the season.

Long Beach starter Kris Honel, the return piece of the Jose Lima trade, held the Flyers scoreless, getting out of several jams with runners in scoring position through seven innings of work.  Honel used an effective breaking ball, mixed in with a 90 mph fastball to account for the Flyers 10 runners left on base through six innings.  Despite walking six batters, the former first-round pick of the Chicago White Sox continued to battle back, not allowing a run against offensively potent Orange County.

Flyers starter Manny Ayala gave up two hits through 6 1/3 innings but walked six batters to go along with six strikeouts.   Jonathan Rouwenhorst and Mike Koons each retired a batter in the top of the seventh to hold Long Beach scoreless in the frame.  Long Beach left 11 runners on base in the game.

Long Beach continues the three-game series at Goodwin Field at Cal State Fullerton against the rival Orange County Flyers on Wednesday before returning to Blair Field on Friday, August 28 for four games against the Victoria Seals to finish the regular season.
